Maps
There are many definitions of maps. In simple terms, a map is a symbolic representation of objects in space and or time.
Many maps are static two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional space, while others are three-dimensional. Although most commonly used to depict geography, maps may represent any space, real or imagined.
Although the earliest maps known are of the heavens, geographic maps of territory have a long tradition and have existed since ancient times. The word "map" comes from the medieval Latin "Mappa mundi," wherein "mappa" meant a napkin or cloth and "mundi" meant the world. Thus, "map" became the shortened term referring to a two-dimensional representation of the Earth's surface.
Maps and art have long been intertwined. Most early maps were masterful pieces of art. Even great artists like Leonardo da Vinci dabbled in map-making. This should not be a surprise — after all, art shares many similarities with mapping. Art is about expressing the artist's imaginative or technical skill, producing artworks that are intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power.
Our Philosophy
Here at Artistic Maps, we share that same ethos. We aim to revive the connection between art and maps, utilising advanced modern technical skills to transform maps into artworks. Artworks that will satisfy our deep-rooted appreciation of beauty and search for meaning. We create maps that are not only artistically beautiful but also deeply personal and meaningful.
Approach
We realise that art should not only mean brushes and paint. Technology allows us to acquire and create not only technically accurate maps, but also to render them into artistic masterpieces. Our approach is to utilise digital technology to create exceptional, personalised, and unique artworks that are transformed into traditional print forms for you to display on your walls as symbols of meaning or extensions of your interior design.
We use locally (UK) manufactured artefacts to create complete pieces. By doing so, we not only support our local small businesses but also connect them with you through art.
